Co-ed Summer Camp Programs

Co-ed camps can vary in length from 2 weeks to full summer. Some camps have a trial period for new younger campers lasting between seven to ten days.

Grouping Children and Activities in co-ed camps:
  • Children are placed in bunks according to their age & grade.
  • Boys and Girls are on the same campus
  • Boys and Girls do not participate in sports instruction together.
  • Boys and Girls may be in plays together and may attend arts and crafts together.
  • Boys and Girls eat in the dining hall on opposite sides and eat with their bunks or their groups.
Length of camp
  • Trial week for younger first time campers.
  • Camp sessions run from 2 weeks to full summer.
  • There are camps that have 2 separate 4 week sessions, each with a new group of campers.

Boys and Girls Dorm Separately

At all the co-ed summer sleepaway camps boys and girls bunk on opposite sides of the camp. They do eat in the same dining hall, but eat with their bunk or group, with boys on one side of the dining hall and girls on the other.

Calling Home
  • Camps have different rules about kids calling home
  • some sleepaway camps do not allow phone calls for the first week, except in situations where it is necessary for the child’s adjustment.
  • The goal is for each camper to adjust to camp life, make friends and enjoy the activities.

We only recommend co-ed camps we've visited, reviewed & approved

Most co-ed summer camps for kids have the campers travel to their activities with their bunk group, while at some camps they travel to their activities separately. While boys and girls usually do not participate together in sport instruction, they may participate together in theatrical plays and in arts and crafts.

Weekly sessions for self improvement

The camps are generally non-denominational. Many co-ed summer camps have a Friday night or Sunday morning service, however this is generally not a religious service but rather a group meeting where the campers discuss what they have learned at camp and their commitment to self-improvement and personal growth. If parents prefer a weekly religious service there are camps that provide this. There are camps that have religious services.

What you should know about the staff of the camps we recommend

Some camps allow campers to select their activities before camp. Most traditional summer sleepaway camps have a required group of activities for campers and allow the camper to choose several of their activities daily. Camps want the campers to be exposed to the full complement of crafts, land sports, water sports (listed above) and nature activities offered.
As the camper get older, the number of choices increases. Most camps have the campers travel to activities with their bunk and group. There are camps where campers travel individually to their selected activities.

There are camps that do allow more choice or total choice. Most of the theater/music/arts camps do allow a great deal of choice, usually more than traditional sleepaway camps.

Safety Concerns

Safety is always a very important concern at all camps. The owners and the staff strive to make sure that all the campers are in safe situations at all times. There is always staff present at all activities and in the bunk when the campers are there. Most camps have a 4 to 1 camper/counselor ratio. Most counselors are college age students with expertise in their particular area, and the supervisory staff are adults who are teachers and parents with many years of experience in their positions. Most camps have security for the camp to insure that no outside visitors are allowed on the camp at any time without their knowledge and permission.

Wellness centers staffed with doctors & nurses 24 hours a day

Most camps have doctors and nurses in attendance in the wellness center. There are rooms for campers to sleep in the infirmary if they need to be personally attended to and their medical condition dictates this treatment. Parents are always notified if their child needs to spend time in the center or if their child needs any type of medication. The medical staff lives in the infirmary and is available 24 hours a day.

Food Allergies & Health Concerns At Camp

Most camps can accommodate campers with food allergies and special medication needs. The camp will determine the best way to handle the camper’s needs by speaking with the parent, the medical staff of the camp, and the camper’s personal physician if necessary. Special dietary requirements are handled by discussions with the parents and the chef and dietician at the camp. Certain foods may need to be sent to camp in particular instances.

Many camps start to fill their spaces the summer before. Many parents like to visit camps the summer before to see a camp in session in order to judge how the camp is run, the atmosphere of the camp and observe the campers and counselors in activities to determine if their child will be happy at that camp. If visiting is not an option, the directors of the camp will meet with prospective families starting in the fall after camp ends.
